Rochester, NY (Lang. B)
What's up guys? Rochester plays an important role in understanding, appreciating and falling in love with "The 9:13" by Martin Naparsteck. This post will serve for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I want you guys to research the history of Rochester, NY. Be careful not to confuse our city with Rochester, MN!!! After you find out about the city's peculiarities, comment on what interests you the most about its politics, society and culture. Who are the famous people from Rochester, NY? Are there any United States national treasures found there? What do people do in the summer? Winter? After reading this post, I know you're all going to Wikipedia! No problem. But you must also use another TWO sources. When you comment, please copy the links to the other TWO sources you have used. Be well. And remember, I am taking note of who's on the blog. The points will be reflected on your final essay. Last week's essay was just a draft. Take your time, read about the city, its impact on the state of New York, on the United States. Read about its past, present and future. The first five comments (well researched) get double points...who can beat Carlos and Dairo to the punch? Good luck!

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Rochester (Greece/Pittsord) but left once I turned 18 and since then have only returned for summers and short visits in winter. I have lived in florida since then. I'm now in my early thirties with three young children and strongly considering a move back to the Roch, for all the good reasons listed on this discussion board. I'm not thrilled with the public schools in florida, which are a top priority for us, and the summer heat is unbearable here. But I am concerned about how my florida-boy husband will handle the cold and wonder if I'm being crazy here to downplay the weather.
So, now that a long winter is just over my question is- how much does the winter impact daily life? Are most people miserable and depressed half the year or do all the other great quality of life factors (and the beautiful summers) in Rochester outweigh the frigid temps?
thanks

ROCHESTER!!!!...
I don't know... I don't wanna do research...
ReplyDeleteI do, nevertheless, consider interesting the way Rochester decayed after som time, I mean, for what you were telling me on Thursday morning. It's also a sample of how does Capitalism needs to step over everything that stands on it's way to progress. I mean, I knew that there was a state called "New York" but I never thought it'd be so huge...
The image that sells of NY is the Empire State, or the Statue of Liberty or times Square, and all of that makes part of NYC...
I think that in "The 9:13" it's shown how people from the STATE of NY are somehow resentful towards ppl in NYC...
Sorry, but it was either my opinion or a blank space :(...
I think that mathews comment is important and hmmm jajaja you always talk about capitalism and political ideas jajaja
ReplyDeleteYeah...
ReplyDeleteIt's one of things that I'm sort of good at...

September 12, 2009 By The Associated Press
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Doctors were trying to save the life of a 12-year-old girl shot in the face when a gunman opened fire on a group of children gathered on a Rochester street corner.
Three children were wounded during the incident Friday night.
A 15-year-old boy was recovering from surgery for a gunshot wound to the back.
A 13-year-old was hit in the thigh. His wounds weren't life threatening.
Police identified the badly injured 12-year-old as Camry McKnight. She was hospitalized Saturday in critical condition.
The shooting happened at about 8:45 p.m. in the corner parking lot of a funeral home where youths often gather at night.
Police say the gunman appeared to be a teenager.

ReplyDeleteclass almost finished!!
ReplyDeleteHey I just realized that ¨democrat and chronicle¨is a news name in the story!!! That would make the story have More sense...
ReplyDeleteNOOO CHARLES TIS ISN'T TRUE....
ReplyDeletehow lui tell in class, Rochester was a very violent place. it was very important, not just because is the place in which the story develope, but for the contry, it was a place with a very good location, so it was to Rochester that most of the capital or big ammounts of capital enters (being USA a high level contry.
ReplyDeletethis small details make a bigger sense in the stiry and can be the answers to many details and questions that the reader can have durinf the read, for example being Rochester a violent place give more suspense to the story, and being so important to the contry, could be ironic because, in a very high level place the you expect to found a very cultural and inquier people, not people like Joe or Eddie the main characters.
the city o rochester was a place so inconfortable for the people ho live there because there its a lot of violence... but its a city with a grate locatioon, have a lake a river a train its important aspects that make this a grate city in the new age.
ReplyDeleteyes now we are waiting you luis... put in the blog a new topic of language b!!!!!
