Is it too simplistic to say that Esther (from "The Bell Jar") goes crazy because of her awkward sexual encounters? Why does her loss of virginity seem to stabilize her? Or is her affair with Irwin, just a piece of the puzzle? I hate to be so basic, but I really feel that it's sex, not her relationship with mom, or pressure from lofty social expectations that slap her with insanity. Who's with me? Who's not?
